BIOGRAPHY

Nicolai Johansen (Denmark, 1986) is a Berlin-based sound artist and experimental composer. His interdisciplinary practice often veers into visual arts and performance art, investigating sonic materialism and new auditive terrains. Drawing on experience through work with both physical and virtual elements, Johansen navigates different realms: he designs and builds sound sculptures which over the years have been included in various projects. Similarly, he engages in programming and often explores these systems in his compositional work, for sound designs, or in installations. These mediums – whether physical or virtual – are used with the intention of stepping outside a sonic conformity to explore fragmentations, (a)tonality and resonant material.

Colours Of Now, an album released in 2021 on the label Rouge Mécanique, features the recordings of a sound sculpture constructed by Johansen. In collaboration with the Icelandic artist and director Rósa Ómarsdóttir, Johansen also produced the sound design and music for the contemporary dance pieces Spills (2019) and MOLTA (2024): two works greatly orchestrated by programming and seeking to explore their visual and sonic structures. Spills was awarded Soundscape of the Year in 2020 at Icelandic Theatre Awards.
